Happy Halloween!

This is getting entered into a pumkin carving contest at Factory Design Labs where my boyfriend works. I put their logo on the butt.

Closet access

Our new house has these great 6′ wide closets, but the problem is that we only have a 2′ wide opening to access this abyss. So we are getting started on our closet opening renovation. We will open the doorway to 5′ wide and install sliding mirror doors.

We’ve removed the studs, moved the electrical and installed the casing. Next we will patch some drywall inside the closet and trim out the opening. Also , I will install a custom threshold which will serve two purposes. 1) To cover the gap in the flooring where the wall used to be and 2) to create a level surface (the floor is sloped) for the sliding door’s bottom track to anchor to.

I’ve moved the cleat for the shelf and rod up to 70″ from the floor to leave 40″ vertical for hanging clothes and 30″ below that for some shelving and other storage compartments.

Yes, Mountains do cry

T-shirt Design. I moved to Denver. I had decided that maybe I would take a break from my work doing carpentry and renovations to adventure in other avenues. So I decided I would design T-shirts. What do you think? Would you buy this T-shirt? Do you think it would be better on a hoodie?

Would you buy this T-shirt? Well it’s for sale right now at Indy Ink. And if they don’t sell there, they will become pillows or framed prints on Etsy.

Doing carpentry and renovations for a living leaves one with lots of downtime and scrap materials that normally get thrown away. I’m always trying to find a good, schedule-flexible way to supplement my income. So I had a few days off , some leftover scraps of bamboo flooring, and inspiration from the glass walls in Pinkberry (I am obsessed with frozen yogurt).

So it turns out, Bamboo flooring is super hard! I guess its compressed or something. This wood was so dense that shooting it with a brad nailer, 8 times out of 10 it would reject the nail. With glue and a plywood strip involved, I was able to get the top put together, but when I got to the legs I decided to skip the nails and just glue it and screw it (in pre-drilled holes of course).

This was a fun little project and I love this piece enough to say, “I’m proud of it”.

Turquoise End Table

Here’s another little piece offurniture. This is an exciting piece to me because I got to use some of that bright colored Formica I got from the dude on craigslist AND this is my first application of my new skills hand cutting dovetail joints!!! This went much better than my MDF dovetail practice.

Side by Side Computing Station

My boyfriend and I like to do our computing side by side and we don’t need the full depth most large desks offer. Aesthetically, we really like that exposed plywood edge you see all over the place these days. So we designed and I built this desk to meet our needs. It is 8’ wide, 22” deep, and reinforced with steel (8’ is a way too long a distance for 3/4 plywood to span, even if it is doubled up). We found a guy on cragslist selling sheets of Formica out of a storage unit for ten bucks a sheet, so this desk among many other things will be laminated. I have some bright colors I’m excited to use but kept it simple/gray for this desk. Ta-dah!
